4L60E vs 4L80E Differences: Swap & Information [Guide

  1. The 4L80e is much larger and heavier than the 4L60E. The 4L60E has a weight of 150 lbs without fluid and a length of 23.5″, while the 4L80e has a weight of 236 lbs and a length of 26.4″. Just with these numbers, you can probably calculate that there is a big difference in size and weight between these transmissions. 2
  2. Clearly, the biggest difference between the TH400 vs 4L80E is the 4L80E's overdrive gear. Although they come from different eras, there is quite a bit that these two transmissions have in common. The mere fact that people are so interested in this topic is a testament to the absolute bulletproof reputation of the TH400
  3. The 4L80E transmission is the advanced progeny of the legendary TurboHydramatic TH400 automatic transmission, and is based heavily on the 400 in both parts and strength, yet featuring an added overdrive gear, a lock-up torque converter and advanced electronic controls. The 4L80E was introduced in 1991 in the GM C/K Trucks line-up, and remained.
  4. The 4L80E is a descendent of the proven TH400 transmission design. It is very rugged, has much more potential for power capacity than any other overdrive transmission on the market. It has better power flow for big power applications, much more clutch capacity and apply area than the 4L60E
  5. The 4L80E is the descendant of the Ole Reliable TH400 transmission. It shares many components and design features. At Jake's Performance the 4L80E is our most popular transmission. We have built them for applications ranging from heavy towing vehicles to 1800+ HP street/strip cars. The 4L80E has proven reliable like it's predecessor

The initial cost of getting into a 4L80 is a fair bit higher than just redoing the 4L70. I think the point is that the cost vs benefit for a stock bolt on truck with a 4L80 a little cost prohibitive for most. You will spend more than you will for a built 4L70 thats for certain The 4l80e thou muscle car kit runs 5600.. is the 4l80e that much better?!? i mean geesh 3400 for an extra gear? yes you get the parts to get it going but wow that's a huge jump for an extra gear. is it really worth it on a strictly street driven car? anyone running a 4l80 trans that can give me an idea of yes it's worth it over a th350

There are several differences between the 4L80E and 4L85E transmission, even though these were upgrades to the TH400. The popularity and strength of the TH400 may have rubbed off on the 4L85E, but it still brought something unique to the table. Some of these differences include The 4L80-E (and similar 4L85-E) was a series of automatic transmissions from General Motors.Designed for longitudinal engine configurations, the series included 4 forward gears. It was an evolution of the Turbo-Hydramatic 400, first produced in October 1963.4L80-Es were optioned only in Chevrolet/GMC pickups, vans, and commercial vehicles, and the Hummer H1 The control system is the same for all 4l80e's with 1 exception. 91-93 4l80e's used a different pressure control solenoid that required a clean8ng cycle every 10 seconds where the solenoid was stroked from full open to full closed and back to normal operation. In 94 they changed to a solenoid that didn't require it

All of this effort results in a 3,600-pound street car that holds the 1/4-mile record for the fastest 4L80E car in the country. Jeff states,The car has been 7.50s at 190 mph in the 1/4-mile and 4.80s at 147 in the 1/8-mile. It has also pulled a 1.17 60-foot. It should go low sevens with the power it makes. Definitely take a ride in a 400/GV car vs. a 4L80E car. I would say the 4L80E has better converter options, it can be configured in lockup You can do a 4L80E converter in just about any configuration as a TH400. Non-billet, billet, 9.5, 10, 11 single disc, multi-disc, etc If you do get a 4L85-E you can be sure it has all the best features of the late-model 4L80-E. There were a whole bunch of changes to the 4L80-E in 1999, and in 2001 they got an all-new overdrive roller-clutch assembly. The 85's needed this design change and the 80's got them too Despite its name, the 4L80E is not an upgrade to its GM counterparts. Introduced alongside the original 4L60 in the early 1990's the 4L80E was designed for large trucks and is designed as a heavy duty unit, rather than a transmission for smaller cars or even some pickups
